Urban Violence Lab Forum
The inaugural Urban Violence Lab (UVL) Forum is a one-day gathering of faculty and students from the University of Oregon College of Design, community advocates from across Portland, and invited global scholars to promote critical conversations on architectural, art, and urban design practices that disrupt existing systems of violence in our communities and urban environments. The event concludes with an evening keynote address by Brad Evans, Professor of Political Violence at the department of Politics, Languages & International Studies at the University of Bath, United Kingdom.
Launched as an advanced architectural design and research studio at the Portland Architecture Program by Elisandra Garcia (Visiting Assistant Professor and UO School of Architecture & Environment Fellow in Design for Spatial Justice), the Urban Violence Laboratory is a platform to investigate, analyze, and synthesize interventions towards urban violence in benefit of communities and sites in need in Portland, Oregon. Displacement, climate violence, houselessness, food insecurity, gentrification, addiction, recovery, gender, urban safety, eviction, transportation, criminal justice system, public education, and trauma-informed design are just some of the research threads currently being developed by students. This forum will contextualize and build upon student work and mark the University of Oregon College of Design’s renewed engagement with the city of Portland and the communities it serves on matters of shared concern.
The event is in-person at UO Portland's White Stag Block and will be streamed via Zoom.
